Copper Mugs May be Harmful?

November 15, 2017

According to a bulletin hat was released by the alcoholic beverages division of the state of Iowa earlier this year, pure copper mugs may be harmful to your health.  The bulletin reviews the FDA guideline that acidic liquids with a pH below 6.0 should not come into contact with copper.  This could cause leaching of the copper into the liquid.   If enough copper is consumed, it can cause copper poisoning.  The state of Iowa has chosen to no longer allow the use of pure copper mugs in places of business which sell alcoholic beverages.  So how can you drink your favorite drink in one of those super cool cups?  Buy one that is lined with nickel or stainless steel.  These metals do not leach into the liquid if the pH is below 6.0.  Many of these mugs can be found online, but here is an example of 2 you could choose, both are listed on Amazon:

These first mugs are a set of 2 which have a stainless steel center with copper plating on the outside and nickel on the inside:

And these really cool mugs which have stainless steel on the inside and are double walled and can be used for hot or cold drinks and even come with 4 stainless steel straws included!

Of course, there are those who believe this suggestion is just a scare tactic.  If you're not sure what to make of this new information, then it is important for you to do your own homework and decide for yourself which mugs you feel most comfortable using.
